Are Astronauts Weightless?

Many people believe that astronauts float because they have escaped Earth's pull, but the International Space Station is actually gripped by nearly 90% of our planet's gravity. Instead of drifting in a void, these explorers are trapped in a perpetual high-speed plummet where the Earth's surface curves away just as fast as they fall toward it. If gravity is still so strong hundreds of miles above us, how is it possible for everything inside the station to feel completely weightless?
